Is your exterminator licensed in Virginia?
Virginia is a DOWNLOAD state rather than a search state. Instead of a lookup box, OPS publishes downloadable reports — including Virginia Certified Commercial/Registered Technician Applicators — described as real-time data current as of the moment the list was generated. Grab the file and search it yourself; note the generation date, because a list downloaded months ago is not evidence of anything today. OPS licenses the businesses, certifies the applicators AND investigates allegations of pesticide misuse, so it is also where a complaint goes if a treatment is botched — a different address from the licensing one: [email protected] or 804-371-6560, versus [email protected] or 804-786-3798 for licensing questions. OPS has launched a new online certification system, so expect these URLs to move.

What to verify, in order
The business license, not just the technician
Most states license the company and certify the individual separately. A certified technician working for an unlicensed business is still an unlicensed job.
The category or phase covers structural work
Licenses are issued by category. An applicator certified for turf and ornamental has no business in your bedroom.
Status is active, not lapsed
Some state databases exclude cancelled licenses from results entirely, so a revoked company returns the same empty result as a typo. If you get nothing, phone the agency before assuming you mistyped.
Complaint and enforcement history
Where a state publishes disciplinary actions they are usually on the board site rather than inside the license search.
