THE 2024 CATEGORY RESHUFFLE IS THE THING TO KNOW: in the legislative session ending March 2024 Idaho renamed a number of pesticide application categories, consolidated some into individual categories and added new ones, to align state categories with the federal ones. So a category name on an older certificate, or in any guide written before 2024, may no longer match what the lookup returns — if the categories look unfamiliar, that is why, and ISDA asks you to call rather than guess. Note the main licensing line 208-332-8600 has been reported as having technical difficulties; use 208-332-8601 or 208-332-8595. Pair with the Idaho law page: you get a three-day notice and then the remedy is to sue, with no withholding and no general repair-and-deduct — so hiring a verifiably licensed operator and keeping the invoice is central to a damages claim.

What to verify, in order
The business license, not just the technician
Most states license the company and certify the individual separately. A certified technician working for an unlicensed business is still an unlicensed job.
The category or phase covers structural work
Licenses are issued by category. An applicator certified for turf and ornamental has no business in your bedroom.
Status is active, not lapsed
Some state databases exclude cancelled licenses from results entirely, so a revoked company returns the same empty result as a typo. If you get nothing, phone the agency before assuming you mistyped.
Complaint and enforcement history
Where a state publishes disciplinary actions they are usually on the board site rather than inside the license search.
